Understanding Notifications

Notifications help you stay updated whenever other users interact with your comments. This guide explains how notifications work, where to find them, and what happens when you open them.

1. What Triggers a Notification?

You will receive a notification when:

  • Another user upvotes your comment

  • Another user replies to your comment

These alerts help you keep track of conversations, engagement, and feedback on your activity.

2. Notification Icon Behavior

The notification icon is the bell icon located on the top right of the website (visible only when you are logged in).

When you receive a new notification:

  • The bell icon shakes

  • The bell icon turns red, indicating something new has happened

This makes it easy to spot new updates right away.

3. Viewing Your Notifications

Clicking the bell icon opens a notification sidebar from the right side of the screen.

Inside the sidebar, you will see:

  • A list of all your notifications

  • New notifications displayed in bold text

  • Old or previously opened notifications shown in normal text

This helps you quickly identify what you haven’t checked yet.

4. Opening a Notification

To view a notification:

  1. Click on any item in the list.

  2. You will be taken directly to the exact comment related to that notification.

Depending on the type of notification, this may show you:

  • The reply left on your comment

  • The updated comment thread

  • The comment that received the upvote

This allows you to follow conversations and interactions without manually searching for them.

5. Marking Notifications as Read

Notifications are automatically marked as “read” (no longer bold) once you click or open them.

You can keep them for later reference or simply close the sidebar when finished.

6. Why Notifications Matter

  • Helps you stay engaged with discussions

  • Keeps you aware of how your comments are performing

  • Makes it easy to follow replies and continue conversations

  • Lets you track feedback from the community through upvotes
