An eruption has kicked off in southwestern Iceland, leading authorities to evacuate the town of Grindavík along with the famous Blue Lagoon hot spring resort, officials confirmed early Tuesday morning.
Magma Advances Following Weeks of Seismic Activity
Phys.org reports that around 6:30 a.m. local time, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) detected fresh magma movement in proximity to Grindavík, a community situated on the Reykjanes Peninsula that has been at the center of intensifying volcanic unrest in recent years.
This event was accompanied by a series of earthquakes, indicating that underground cracks formed and allowed molten rock to ascend toward the Earth's surface.
This eruption represents the peninsula’s eighth volcanic episode since the reactivation of its volcanic systems in 2021 after centuries of dormancy. The IMO had been alerting the public for days about escalating signs pointing towards an imminent eruption.
Initially, lava had not broken through the surface, but the ongoing seismic signals foreshadowed active volcanic processes just beneath.
Grindavík Ordered to Evacuate Again
In response to escalating volcanic activity, the town of Grindavík, with approximately 3,500 residents, underwent rapid evacuation procedures. Emergency teams worked promptly to vacate some 40 homes early Tuesday morning as magma continued to carve its way underground.
According to national broadcaster RÚV, emergency workers mobilized overnight to manage the evacuation efforts, drawing on experience from earlier eruptions. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far. The authorities noted that, “no magma has surfaced yet, but an eruption is anticipated shortly.”

Meanwhile, the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s renowned geothermal spa and a major tourist attraction, was evacuated completely. Situated just north of Grindavík, the facility closed its doors to visitors and employees as seismic tremors intensified before dawn.
This shutdown happens during Iceland’s peak tourist season. Although the spa has previously halted operations amid volcanic unrest, the recurring interruptions are sparking debate about its future viability in this geologically volatile region.
Authorities have not imposed travel bans yet, and international flights continue operating normally — a notable difference from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010, which led to widespread air travel chaos across Europe.
