SpaceX plans to launch the highly awaited Polaris Dawn mission on Tuesday, August 27th. This groundbreaking endeavor will send a Crew Dragon spacecraft to its furthest orbit to date and include the inaugural private spacewalk. Fans can watch the historic moments unfold live.
Polaris Dawn will transport a team of four astronauts into Earth’s orbit aboard the Crew Dragon capsule, launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A Falcon 9 rocket will propel the vehicle during a launch window spanning four hours, starting at 3:38 a.m. ET (0738 GMT). Originally set for August 26th, the launch was postponed by a day to complete thorough preparations.
Viewing the Launch and Spacewalk Live
The liftoff and the planned spacewalk on Flight Day 3 (around August 29th) will be broadcast live on the Polaris Dawn and SpaceX channels on X (formerly Twitter). The live stream starts approximately an hour before launch to ensure viewers catch every moment.
Space.com also offers a live webcast that includes impressive perspectives from the ground, views of the rocket in flight, and inside the Crew Dragon spacecraft.
The mission crew is headed by Jared Isaacman, the billionaire entrepreneur who is simultaneously the funder and commander. He will be joined by retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel Scott "Kidd" Poteet, alongside SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon.
Throughout the five-day journey, the Crew Dragon will reach an unprecedented orbit of about 435 miles (700 kilometers) above Earth, which is nearly 185 miles (297.73 km) higher than the orbit of the International Space Station, where most NASA-affiliated Crew Dragon missions typically dock.
Historic Spacewalk and Scientific Research
On the mission’s second day, Isaacman and Gillis will conduct a two-hour spacewalk, marking the first-ever private EVA (extravehicular activity). This spacewalk will test a new spacesuit prototype under real space conditions. In addition to this pioneering event, the crew will perform multiple scientific and technological experiments during their time in orbit.
About the Polaris Dawn Mission Series
Polaris Dawn is the inaugural mission in the Polaris Program, a trilogy of missions supported and led by Isaacman. Each flight is designed to advance private space exploration while developing new technologies to support human space travel in the future.

This mission signifies significant progress in the growing commercial spaceflight sector, setting new milestones for privately-funded space initiatives. Witness this extraordinary chapter in space history as it happens.
