First Live Footage Reveals Rare Blood-Red Squid in Antarctic Depths

Deep under the icy Antarctic seas, scientists have recorded for the first time a stunning sight: a vivid blood-red squid captured alive in its natural environment. On December 25, 2024, aboard the research vessel RV Falkor operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, researchers filmed the rarely seen Antarctic gonate squid (Gonatus antarcticus). Though discovered more than 100 years ago, this deep-sea species has remained elusive until now.

Documenting the Rare Species

The encounter occurred in the Weddell Sea, a remote and frigid environment known for its rich marine biodiversity. At depths reaching 2,100 meters beneath the ice, the squid was observed navigating the dark, cold waters. During its movement, it emitted a greenish ink plume, a defense strategy typical among squid, providing scientists with a rare observation of its natural behavior.

Thanks to cutting-edge ocean robotics, particularly remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), this groundbreaking footage was secured. Although first described by Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg in 1898, this marks the inaugural recording of the squid alive in its deep ocean habitat.

Verification of the Species
