A coalition of current and former team members has made an official appeal for CEO Elon Musk to step down, pointing to his contentious leadership as a major contributor to the company’s recent downturn. This petition highlights a widening rift between Musk’s management approach and Tesla’s ability to satisfy its market.

Demand Decline Emerges as Major Concern at Tesla

While Tesla’s product lineup remains impressive, its reputation is now imperiled largely due to leadership controversies. Employees argue that the core issue isn’t the company’s innovation or manufacturing but the reputational harm caused by Musk’s conduct. They note a troubling 9% drop in Tesla’s sales during the first quarter of 2025, a stark contrast to a 10% increase in overall U.S. electric vehicle purchases. This discrepancy has heightened internal worry that leadership is failing to resolve foundational challenges.

In a public statement, the group stressed that Musk’s personal controversies have turned into a significant liability for Tesla. They declared, “The damage done to Elon’s personal brand is now irreversible, and as the public face of Tesla, that damage has become our burden.” Adding, “We stand at a decisive juncture: either continue under Elon’s leadership and risk further customer erosion or proceed without him so the products and mission might thrive or fail independently.”

Musk’s leadership has increasingly polarized Tesla employees. Supporters remain, motivated either by alignment with his political stance or belief in his vision to steer Tesla towards an AI and robotics-driven future. However, others see Musk’s focus on projects like Dogecoin (DOGE) as distracting amid growing company difficulties.

The letter’s authors highlighted a significant disconnect between Musk’s public declarations and Tesla’s operational needs. They criticized his recent remarks about “refocusing” on Tesla, viewing them as dismissive of the company’s broader issues. “This suggests recent struggles stem from his lack of attention, rather than his leadership choices,” they noted. They emphasize that the workforce has sustained the company during adversity and that leadership, not employees, should bear the blame for the current predicament.

Leadership Issues Undermining Tesla’s Sales

The letter also sheds light on a disturbing pattern: despite Tesla’s attempts to refresh its vehicle range, including the Model Y, inventory continues to accumulate unsold units. "Production efficiency and quality are at an all-time high. The shortfall is in demand, not product," the statement asserts.

Rather than providing a sales boost, new models are sitting idle, even as competition surges and other automakers report ramped-up electric vehicle sales. This trend is troubling given that in Q1 2025, while overall U.S. electric vehicle sales jumped by 10%, Tesla’s sales experienced a 9% downturn.

Repercussions for Vocal Employees

Voicing dissent at Tesla has not been without consequences. Matthew LaBrot, a former employee and a leading signer of the letter, asserts his dismissal was directly linked to his role in the protest. After over five years at Tesla in a Staff Program Manager capacity overseeing Sales and Delivery Training Programs, LaBrot was let go following the letter's publication. He shared the termination details on LinkedIn, attributing it to his stance against Musk.
