Elon Musk Addresses the Viral Buzz Around the ‘Tesla Phone’ Rumors

In today’s fast-paced digital world, rumors often outstrip facts, and the persistent talk of a Tesla smartphone, often called the Model Pi, is a prime example. Despite Elon Musk clearly stating as early as 2023 that Tesla has “no intentions” of launching a phone, platforms like X (formerly Twitter) keep sparking chatter. Speculation includes features like solar charging, Starlink connectivity, and even security on par with Neuralink technology.

Research published in 2024 by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford offers insights into how tech rumors thrive online. Their findings indicate that digital rumors gain traction when "algorithms boost content without verifying its authenticity," exactly the situation unfolding with the Model Pi chatter.

From early 2021 through February 2025, numerous viral social media posts featuring sophisticated AI-crafted illustrations have depicted this imaginary device as a game-changer, capable of challenging Apple and Google’s dominance.

Musk’s Direct but Nuanced Rejection

The most explicit refutation came during Musk’s chat on The Joe Rogan Experience in November 2023. “No, we’re not making a phone. We could, but it’s not on our agenda unless absolutely necessary,” Musk stated clearly.

However, he kept a narrow door open, suggesting that if tech giants like Apple or Google blocked Tesla’s apps or Starlink services on their platforms, the company might reconsider. This conditional stance has only fueled further rumors.

So far, there is no evidence from Tesla’s job postings, patent applications, or supplier movements indicating a smartphone initiative. Industry experts emphasize Tesla’s focus remains on autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, and energy solutions, not consumer phones.

Confusion Caused by an Unrelated 'Tesla' Brand

Complicating matters is a different company named Tesla, located in Eastern Europe. This unrelated firm produces affordable Android smartphones, such as the EXPLR 9, priced below $200 and sold on platforms like Amazon.

While unconnected to Elon Musk’s enterprises, many social media users mistakenly link the two. A 2024 International Data Corporation (IDC) report highlighted how overlapping brand names can mislead consumers, especially when images lack clear attribution.

This confusion has led to numerous cases on forums and Reddit where photos of Serbian-made Tesla phones were incorrectly thought to be the rumored Model Pi, amplifying the myth.

The Myth’s Appeal Rooted in Distrust of Major Tech Firms

The fascination with a Tesla phone transcends technology—it taps into ideology. A considerable number of online users view Musk as a potential disruptor to the mobile stronghold of Apple and Google.

Concerns about app store surcharges, privacy breaches, and data security have led some to seek alternatives, real or imagined. The vision of a device that seamlessly integrates with Starlink, bypasses traditional app stores, and connects with Tesla’s ecosystem and X is alluring. Yet, for now, it remains purely speculative.

“The internet wants a counter-narrative,” says Carter. “Even if there’s no product, no prototype, no plans—it’s a symbol. That’s why it won’t die.”

Every new fake rendering, rumor, or leak only intensifies the legend of the Tesla phone, keeping the story alive in the collective online imagination—far removed from reality.
