Blue Origin Unveils Enhanced New Glenn 9×4 Rocket with 77-Ton LEO Capability

Blue Origin, the aerospace firm established by Jeff Bezos, is advancing its spaceflight technology with a significant update to its New Glenn rocket. This upgraded version, called the New Glenn 9×4, boasts increased power and payload potential, setting the stage for more ambitious missions ahead.

A Major Advancement in Rocket Technology

The New Glenn rocket has already demonstrated its capabilities through successful flights, but the newest iteration takes performance up a notch. By expanding its first stage propulsion to feature nine BE-4 engines instead of seven, the New Glenn 9×4 delivers roughly 15% more thrust than before. Alongside this, the second stage will now use two improved BE-3U engines, enabling the rocket to reach enhanced altitudes and carry heavier payloads. These improvements are designed to enhance both mission flexibility and lifting strength for future space endeavors.

“The enhancements span propulsion, structures, avionics, reusability, and recovery operations, and will be phased into upcoming New Glenn missions beginning with NG-3,” Blue Origin wrote in an update.

Set for launch early next year, NG-3 marks the third flight of the New Glenn vehicle and will showcase these next-level upgrades.

The New Glenn 9×4 is expected to boost its payload capacity to an impressive 77 tons to low Earth orbit (LEO), a significant jump from the original model’s 50-ton limit. This enhancement positions it among the leading heavy-lift rockets, meeting the increasing demands of industries requiring substantial payload deliveries to orbit.

Innovating for the Future: Design and Operational Efficiency

Beyond sheer thrust, Blue Origin continues to emphasize reusability as a core strength. The New Glenn 9×4 incorporates a newly engineered reusable payload fairing that supports a higher launch cadence. This fairing expands its diameter to 28.5 feet, up from the earlier 23 feet, allowing for more voluminous cargoes. Blue Origin highlights that these design changes not only amplify capability but also streamline mission turnaround and reduce costs.

“Additional vehicle upgrades include a reusable fairing to support increased flight rates, an updated lower-cost tank design, and a higher-performing and reusable thermal protection system to improve turnaround time,” Blue Origin said.

These upgrades showcase Blue Origin’s ongoing dedication to lowering space access expenses while ensuring reliable, repeatable performance. Prioritizing reusable components, the company aims to make spaceflight more cost-effective across commercial satellite launches and deep-space missions.

The improved thermal protection system plays a critical role in enabling rapid refurbishment of the New Glenn between flights, facilitating increased launch frequency — a key factor as Blue Origin pursues both governmental and commercial contracts ahead.
