Enigmatic Golden Sphere Discovered in Alaska’s Deep Ocean: Scientists Ponder Its Nature

During a live dive broadcast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), explorers came across a strange golden sphere resting on the seabed near Alaska. Found at depths exceeding two miles, this soft, gold-toned object has captivated scientists, who are debating its mysterious origin. Its unusual surface texture combined with a punctured hole has led to a range of theories—from the possibility of it being an egg to an undiscovered type of deep-sea sponge.

The discovery took place as part of the Seascape Alaska 5 expedition, which focuses on probing and charting previously unexamined deep-sea ecosystems. NOAA researchers were piloting a remotely operated vehicle when this luminous orb appeared on their cameras, instantly raising questions because of its distinctive hole.

Exploring the Depths of Alaska’s Ocean

The Seascape Alaska 5 mission, launched in late August, represents an ongoing scientific effort to catalogue and understand the diverse habitats beneath Alaska’s deep waters. These abyssal zones—often more than two miles below the surface—remain among Earth’s least explored environments. Researchers are particularly eager to learn more about the region’s unique biodiversity, including coral reefs, sponges, and other fascinating marine life. While numerous new species have been unveiled in earlier deep-sea ventures, this golden orb opens a fresh, puzzling chapter.

The mission’s live video feed has engaged audiences worldwide, showcasing discoveries ranging from mud volcanoes to unfamiliar ocean inhabitants. Yet, the golden orb drew the most intrigue—not just due to its striking coloration but also because of the eerie appearance that led some scientists to liken the scene to the start of a “horror film.”

The Golden Sphere’s Identity: What Could It Be?

The orb’s striking golden color, amplified by the submersible’s lighting, immediately caught the team’s eye. Upon closer examination, its surface resembled fleshy skin but lacked any identifiable anatomical features. A hole in the orb sparked speculation that it might have been tampered with or inhabited by another creature. One scientist remarked that “something either entered or exited through that hole.”

NOAA’s official report states that no definitive conclusion has been reached regarding the orb’s origin. However, its texture and the puncture suggest it might be an egg case belonging to a deep-sea organism. Kerry Howell, a deep-sea ecologist from the University of Plymouth, noted the rarity of encountering an object so enigmatic that it defies easy classification.

Howell pointed out that although expeditions frequently discover new species, it is uncommon to find something that challenges all known categories.

“We’re going with egg because of the texture. It felt fleshy and it doesn’t have any obvious anatomy. It has a hole in it that suggests something has come in or gone out. But it doesn’t look like any egg I’ve ever seen.”

Investigating the Hole and Its Contents

Whether the hole was created by another living creature or is a natural feature remains uncertain. The orb’s size surpasses that of typical fish eggs, prompting scientists to speculate about its connection to a yet-undiscovered deep-sea species.

“If it is an egg,” Howell wondered, “the really interesting question is whose egg is it? It’s quite big. That’s not a small fish egg. That’s a sizeable thing.”

To further analyze the object, NOAA experts delicately extracted the orb from the ocean floor using specialized suction equipment. It is currently undergoing laboratory examination, including potential DNA testing, which may reveal crucial information about its classification. For now, this golden orb remains an enigmatic presence in the depths of the Gulf of Alaska.
