Experts Detect Covert Data Leakage in Deepseek AI Linked to China Mobile and Military Affiliates

Security analysts have identified concealed code within the online interface of the Chinese AI platform Deepseek, sparking fears of potential unauthorized data transmission to China Mobile—a major telecommunications firm tied to the Chinese government and military. This discovery suggests a possible widescale global surveillance risk.

Undercover Code Linking Deepseek to China Mobile

Researchers specializing in cybersecurity have found a hidden script embedded in Deepseek's web login and registration system. Although it appears to serve user authentication purposes, the code actually connects the AI service with China Mobile, one of China's top telecom operators.

Initial reports by ABC News and The Independent spotlighted this finding, raising alarms especially in the U.S., where China Mobile has faced sanctions because of reported ties to Chinese military operations.

Extensive Data Gathering

Canadian cybersecurity firm Feroot, responsible for detecting the suspicious code, warns that Deepseek captures substantial user information from devices. There are concerns that this data might be covertly sent to China Mobile without consent.

Feroot’s CEO Ivan Tsarynny expressed bluntly:

“It is shocking that we are allowing China to probe Americans unknowingly, and yet no action is being taken to stop it.”

Additional analysis by the Associated Press verified the code’s existence and suggested its activation could depend on the user's geography or login scenario.

More Than Just a TikTok Issue

Experts highlight that the risk posed by this undisclosed data transfer surpasses concerns surrounding TikTok.

Joel Reardon, a cybersecurity researcher from the University of Calgary, noted that during his examinations, the code was inactive in transmitting data but warned of its potential conditional activation, complicating detection efforts.

Unlike TikTok, which is predominantly used to share entertainment content, Deepseek handles highly confidential user searches. This AI tool could inadvertently reveal trade secrets, personal data, and sensitive research information.

“This isn’t just about sharing viral videos. We’re talking about requests that could contain sensitive business and personal information,” warned Tsarynny.

Deliberate Engineering or an Accidental Inclusion?

The existence of this secretive code prompts the critical question: was it intentionally embedded or simply an oversight?

Authorities like Tsarynny argue it’s improbable that such a complex integration was accidental. Considering Deepseek’s direct association with China Mobile—a state-controlled enterprise under stringent government management—the theory of intentional data routing gains traction.

This uncovering has intensified demands for rigorous evaluation of Chinese AI technologies within Western digital frameworks. Amid escalating U.S.-China disputes over data privacy and AI oversight, this case may trigger a much broader clampdown on Chinese tech firms operating internationally.
