In a fascinating blend of fantasy and reality, one individual’s unique ambition to embody a dog has blossomed into an extraordinary venture—a zoo dedicated to human-to-animal transformations.
From Wearing a Collie Outfit to Establishing an Entire Zoo
Introducing Toco, a man from Japan who captured attention in 2023 after investing £11,000 in an incredibly realistic collie costume. His intention was to experience life as a canine, imitating behaviors like walking on all fours, wagging a tail, and enjoying belly scratches. His unusual transformation both intrigued and baffled online audiences, with many mistaking his suit for an actual dog.
Rather than stopping at his personal canine ambitions, Toco decided to expand the concept. He has now inaugurated a “zoo” where others can explore their animal fantasies firsthand.
Introducing Tocotoco Zoo
Launched officially on January 26, 2024, in Saitama Prefecture, just north of Tokyo, the Tocotoco Zoo offers a completely different experience than traditional animal parks. Here, guests are encouraged not to simply observe animals but to embody them.
For a fee of ¥49,000 (approximately £250), visitors can slip into a lifelike Alaskan Malamute costume and enjoy up to three hours experiencing life as a dog. The suits are tailored for individuals between 4’11" and 5’11" tall, ensuring a proper fit for the immersive adventure.
There’s even a 10% price reduction when the costume’s mouth cannot be opened or closed, as this adds to the authenticity of the experience.
An Unconventional Attraction or Mere Oddity?
Toco shares that his inspiration stems from a lifelong passion. In a YouTube video, he stated:
“I dreamed about becoming an animal since I was a child, and when I grew up, my dream came true in the form of a costume!”
He envisions Tocotoco Zoo as a place where others with similar animalistic dreams can gain perspective by stepping into an animal’s shoes.
However, this is far from an ordinary family outing. Imagine wandering through the grounds to find a silverback gorilla striking its chest, only to remove its headgear and order breakfast from a staff member.
Future Plans
Currently, Tocotoco Zoo offers dog suits exclusively, but Toco aims to broaden the offerings. He plans to add panda costumes while deliberately excluding options like cats and foxes, citing their sizes as “too small for human wear”. He also notes that the idea of a human-sized feline would be unsettling.
Visitors interested in this out-of-the-ordinary experience must book their session at least 30 days prior. Group sessions are available, making it possible to celebrate special occasions by spending time in costume and embracing the playful spirit of animal impersonation.
