Unitree Robotics, renowned for its quadrupedal robots, is now stepping into the humanoid robot arena with its latest offering, the G1 model, available for $16,000. Having made its name with four-legged robots like the Go2 and B2, the company is expanding its focus to bipedal innovations with promising results.
Following fierce competition from industry giants such as Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and Sanctuary AI, the G1 stands out by balancing affordability with advanced functions. Previous humanoid prototypes were priced near $90,000, but Unitree’s latest model significantly lowers the barrier to entry while enhancing capability.
G1 Demonstrates Impressive Mobility and Agility
Beyond basic locomotion, the G1 exhibits impressive physical feats. In a recent demonstration, it showcased jumping, spinning, hopping, and even dancing skills. Its practical abilities include navigating staircases cluttered with obstacles, adjusting its walking style dynamically to avoid hazards, and running at speeds reaching 2 m/s (roughly 4.5 mph or 7.24 km/h). Notably, the robot maintained balance while being forcefully pushed by a team member.
Since its launch earlier this year, the G1 has been refined to prepare for mass production. Engineers have enhanced its structure and functionality, creating a sleeker and more energy-efficient model. Though mass manufacturing isn’t confirmed yet, the G1’s progress indicates it’s nearing widespread release.
High-Tech Features Within a Compact Design
Measuring 1.32 meters in height and weighing 35 kilograms, the G1 integrates sophisticated technology in a small footprint. Its 3D LiDAR sensor and RealSense depth camera are positioned behind a distinctive LED-ringed visor, enabling precise navigation in challenging environments. The robot also includes a noise-canceling microphone array for effective voice command processing and a 5-watt stereo speaker that delivers clear audio feedback.
With 23 degrees of freedom, the G1’s articulated movement mimics lifelike gestures, supported by a 9,000-mAh battery offering around two hours of runtime. All cords are securely arranged to avoid entanglement and ensure seamless operation.
