Luxury fashion brand Prada has partnered with Axiom Space to develop a state-of-the-art spacesuit tailored for NASA’s upcoming Artemis III lunar expedition, marking humanity’s next giant leap on the Moon.

This unique collaboration combines advanced aerospace engineering with cutting-edge design, culminating in the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU). Crafted specifically for lunar surface exploration, the suit offers upgraded performance, superior protection, and an elegant design signature, setting a fresh benchmark for spacesuit innovation.

Revealed on October 16, 2024, during the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, the AxEMU is a leap forward in spacesuit development. Created by Axiom Space in collaboration with Prada, it is engineered to shield astronauts from the harsh lunar surface conditions, especially around the Moon’s South Pole.

Compared to earlier suits, the AxEMU delivers improved mobility, enhanced safety systems, and supports spacewalks lasting up to eight hours. Prada’s influence shines in the design of the outer protective layer, using advanced materials to defend wearers against extreme thermal fluctuations and abrasive lunar dust. “Sharing expertise on premium materials and meticulous stitching techniques has been invaluable,” commented Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Prada’s contributions also enhance the suit’s durability and wearer comfort, ensuring astronauts can complete demanding tasks under lunar conditions. The suit’s reflective white exterior helps deflect solar radiation and adds a distinctive, stylish look balancing form with function.

The AxEMU incorporates pioneering technology far surpassing the Apollo-era suits. Key advances include greater flexibility for improved astronaut movement during complex lunar activities. Its design is highly adaptable, fitting a wide range of body types—from the smallest female astronauts to the largest males—promoting inclusivity in future crew selections.

Safety is paramount: multiple backup systems are embedded to protect the wearer from potential failures. An integrated diagnostic tool continuously monitors both astronaut health and suit functionality. The suit features a reusable carbon dioxide filtering mechanism and cutting-edge cooling systems to maintain comfort for extended extravehicular tasks.

A specially designed glove system enhances manual dexterity for handling equipment, while the helmet features an anti-glare visor coating for superior visibility in bright lunar conditions.

Prada added a striking red stripe to the suit, paying homage to the tradition of identifying the mission commander’s suit with a red accent—a detail inspired by Prada’s design contributions to the Luna Rossa sailing team. In addition to aesthetics, Prada’s role has been critical in elevating the suit’s functional performance. “Our expert teams have reshaped spacesuit development by applying advanced design principles to the AxEMU,” said Matt Ondler, President of Axiom Space. This collaboration exemplifies how unconventional partnerships can drive progress in space exploration.

A Modular Suit Ready for Varied Missions

Although primarily designed for NASA’s Artemis III, the AxEMU will adapt to diverse mission environments. Its scalable framework makes it suitable for operations in low-Earth orbit, including stays aboard the International Space Station or upcoming commercial platforms like Axiom’s own space station. This versatility future-proofs the suit across multiple spaceflight applications.

Rigorous assessments, such as underwater trials at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, simulate lunar gravity conditions to validate the suit’s performance. These crucial evaluations ensure the AxEMU meets and exceeds mission demands ahead of the planned 2026 Artemis III launch. Additional refinements and testing stages will continue until the design’s final approval in 2025.
