Elon Musk’s SpaceX facility in Boca Chica, Texas, has now officially become a recognized city named Starbase. Situated near the southern border of Texas adjacent to the US-Mexico line, Starbase covers approximately 1.6 square miles and will act as SpaceX’s operational hub. This milestone follows Musk’s initial land acquisition in 2012 aimed at developing a launch and test site for the Starship rocket program.
A New Chapter: From Testing Grounds to Urban Hub
The concept of Starbase emerged to broaden SpaceX’s activities in the region. What started as Musk’s land purchases and the establishment of Starship testing facilities has turned Boca Chica into a key location for the company’s advancements. The area has hosted multiple test launches, including Starship's inaugural launch, which, despite initial lift-off success, ended in an explosion shortly after. The transition of the site into an official city will greatly enhance Boca Chica’s role in spaceflight development.
On May 3, 2025, voters in Cameron County overwhelmingly approved the cityhood of Starbase. With 212 votes in favor and only six against among 218 total ballots, the initiative passed by a decisive margin. Musk celebrated this achievement on Twitter, declaring: “Starbase, Texas Is now a real city!”
Leadership and Governance of Starbase
Following its incorporation, The New York Times has reported that SpaceX Vice President Bobby Peden will serve as Starbase’s inaugural mayor, running unopposed. Supporting him in city governance will be two commissioners, Jenna Petrzelka, a former SpaceX operations engineering manager, and Jordan Buss, the company’s senior director of Environmental Health and Safety. Together, they will guide the initial development phases of Starbase.
Although Musk has not disclosed detailed future plans for the city, early indications suggest Starbase will provide housing for SpaceX employees and incorporate amenities such as a sushi restaurant to support the growing community.
Community Concerns and Environmental Considerations
The emergence of Starbase has drawn criticism from local residents and environmental advocates. There is apprehension surrounding the privatization of land previously accessible to the public, especially the well-frequented Boca Chica Beach. The approval to increase rocket launches from five to 25 annually has also raised alarms about potential harm to local wildlife and coastal habitats.
Concerns about hurricane risks add to the debate, as the low-lying Boca Chica area faces significant exposure to severe storms. Critics argue that hosting a rocket launch complex in such a vulnerable location may jeopardize both infrastructure and safety.
Growth Prospects and Starbase’s Vision
Looking ahead, Starbase plans include expansion of employee housing to serve an enlarging SpaceX workforce alongside community-building projects. Among them is the Ad Astra school, created by Musk initially for his children. Now, it educates around 300 students aged 10 to 14 from various regions, focusing on innovation, critical thinking, and teamwork.
While the city’s full vision is still unfolding, additional developments—like a sushi dining spot near Musk’s residence—have been mentioned. Musk’s influence is evident in these ventures, but many aspects remain in early stages. Nonetheless, Starbase’s designation as an official city marks a bold step toward transforming Boca Chica into a thriving space exploration center.
