Researchers have uncovered an enormous fortress dating back 5,000 years beneath dense forest cover in Romania’s Neamț County. This site, originating from the cusp of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, offers fresh insights into the advanced nature of early human settlements in this area, challenging long-held assumptions about prehistoric civilizations.
LiDAR Scanning Unlocks Secrets of Lost Stronghold
Utilizing LiDAR drone technology, which employs rapid laser bursts to map terrain obscured by vegetation, archaeologists made the groundbreaking discovery. “By leveraging today’s technology and LiDAR imaging, I could reconstruct an accurate representation of a nearly 5000-year-old fortification,” explained Vasile Diaconu, head archaeologist at the Neamț County Museum Complex. LiDAR’s precision in detecting faint man-made features beneath dense woods gave the team an unprecedented view of the site’s layout.
The fortress is situated on raised ground and includes extensive defensive features like wide ditches and earthen embankments designed to fortify the site. According to Diaconu, these ditches “were remarkably large, extending hundreds of meters and reflecting a significant human effort in their construction.” The elevated location offered commanding views of the environment, underscoring the strategic design. This extensive infrastructure implies a well-organized community capable of large-scale coordinated building efforts.

Joint Efforts Between Archaeology and Technology Specialists
The finding was the product of collaboration among several entities, including Geocad Services, Geo Edu Lab, and Romania’s National Institute for Research and Development for Earth Physics. Leading the project was Vasile Diaconu, supported by Vlad Dulgheriu, owner of Geocad Services and former student of Diaconu. This mentor-mentee partnership allowed the integration of sophisticated LiDAR methods, marking a significant advancement in archaeological exploration.
Diaconu highlighted the critical role of embracing modern technological tools in archaeology. “Using advanced technologies is essential for unveiling the intricate details of historical sites,” he stated. The revelation of this meticulously constructed fortress showcases the remarkable complexity of early human societies, surpassing what conventional excavation techniques alone have uncovered. As LiDAR and related tools gain wider adoption, they will continue to reveal hidden archaeological treasures beneath soil and foliage.
