In Pombal, Portugal, a man uncovered an astonishing fossil collection while digging on his land in 2017. What started as a few bone fragments soon revealed an extraordinary trove of dinosaur remains, thought to be from one of Europe’s most gigantic dinosaurs.
The discovery unfolded when the individual spotted unusual bones during excavation. Initially minor finds quickly escalated as more sizeable fossils appeared. Scientists were alerted, leading to extensive digs that uncovered impressive skeletal parts, including enormous vertebrae and ribs stretching over 10 feet in length.
The Enormous Dino Unearthed
Experts identified the fossils as belonging to a sauropod, a herbivore famous for its elongated neck and tail. Elisabete Malafaia, a paleontologist at the University of Lisbon, suggests the remains might be from a Brachiosaurus, a species known to reach lengths of approximately 82 feet and heights up to 39 feet.
“It’s one of the biggest specimens discovered in Europe, perhaps in the world,” Malafaia said to AFP. The sheer size of the creature is enough to make anyone pause and consider how massive life forms once were.
The official statement notes that large dinosaur fossils rarely retain their original arrangement after fossilization. Remarkably, this find shows vertebrae and ribs positioned much like they were in the living animal.
This kind of preservation is relatively rare for large-sized dinosaurs from the Portuguese fossil record and indicates particular and unusual environmental and taphonomic features,” she added.

Pombal: A Window into the Jurassic
Malafaia explains that the area has yielded significant Late Jurassic fossils, giving insight into life roughly 145 million years ago. This recent sauropod discovery stands out for both its colossal size and exceptional fossil preservation.
Pombal has long been a rich site for paleontological exploration, with ongoing findings continually enhancing knowledge of ancient ecosystems. The revelation that such a massive dinosaur inhabited this region is both awe-inspiring and enlightening.

Future Discoveries Await
Excavations are continuing, with scientists eager to explore more potential fossils lying beneath the surface in Pombal. The unearthed bones have been moved to a lab for cleaning and detailed examination, fueling hopes for additional finds.
“The research in the Monte Agudo paleontological locality confirms that the region of Pombal has an important fossil record of Late Jurassic vertebrates,” noted the Postdoctoral researcher.
Researchers remain hopeful that further discoveries will help reconstruct a near-complete skeleton of this enormous dinosaur. Steve Brusatte, a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh, called the find “gobsmacking,” amazed that a dinosaur rib cage could emerge from someone’s backyard.
