Hurricane Ernesto has escalated to a Category 2 cyclone and is advancing towards Bermuda, where it is anticipated to have a major impact this weekend.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) released alerts on Friday, encouraging residents and authorities to finalize preparations as Ernesto's intense winds and heavy rains approach the island.
Current Status and Predicted Track
At 11 a.m. AST, Ernesto was positioned roughly 215 miles south-southwest of Bermuda with sustained winds of 100 mph. The storm is progressing northward at 14 mph and is expected to impact Bermuda by Friday night. The NHC forecasts continued intensification as Ernesto travels over the western Atlantic.
A hurricane warning remains active for Bermuda, indicating hurricane conditions will reach the island within 36 hours. The National Weather Service emphasized that all safety and property protection efforts should be wrapped up immediately. The island is expected to face heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hazardous storm surge.

Potential Dangers for Bermuda and Nearby Areas
Key threats from Ernesto include dangerous flash floods, gusty winds, and storm surge flooding. Rainfall accumulations are forecasted between 6 to 12 inches, with some places possibly receiving as much as 15 inches. Coastal inundation could result from storm-driven waves pushing inland.
According to the NHC, “Bermuda will likely experience the storm’s outer rainbands starting Friday evening.” Given Ernesto’s extensive size—hurricane-strength winds extend up to 70 miles from its center and tropical-storm-force winds reach 265 miles—impacts will be felt well before the eye passes. Officials caution that the storm surge may cause severe coastal flooding alongside the intense winds.
Wider Effects on Puerto Rico and U.S. Seaboard
The influence of Hurricane Ernesto extends beyond Bermuda, continuing to affect parts of the Caribbean. Puerto Rico, which faced Ernesto earlier this week, remains challenged by massive power outages and a severe heatwave. On Friday morning, power was still out to more than 239,000 homes and businesses, while temperatures soared into the mid-90s, adding to residents’ difficulties.
In response, President Biden authorized federal aid for Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, cruise lines such as Carnival, Celebrity, and Norwegian have rerouted their voyages to steer clear of Ernesto as it passes through the northern Caribbean.
Along the U.S. East Coast, the NHC warned of life-threatening surf and hazardous rip currents caused by storm swells generated by Ernesto. These conditions are expected to last through the weekend, posing risks to swimmers and beach visitors from the Turks and Caicos up to Atlantic Canada.
Preparations Underway in Bermuda
As Bermuda readies for Ernesto, local emergency teams are actively working to reduce potential harm. The island’s emergency radio station will begin issuing frequent updates from 8 p.m. on Friday to keep the public informed as the storm nears.
The NHC described Ernesto as “a large and dangerous hurricane,” urging residents to take all necessary measures for their protection. The storm’s uncertain trajectory and the chance of additional strengthening mean Bermuda could face severe impacts over the weekend, including extended power failures and major flooding.
With Hurricane Ernesto forecasted to move near or over Bermuda by Saturday, authorities advise everyone to remain alert and prepared for a potentially severe storm.
