Friends Unearth 1,800-Year-Old Roman Gold Necklace and Medieval Treasures in Poland

What started as a casual summer pastime involving metal detectors has blossomed into one of the most remarkable archaeological finds in Poland's recent history. A group of friends from Kalisz uncovered a remarkable cache of ancient items including medieval coins, silver bars, and a Roman-era gold necklace, all while searching for relics from wartime. Their discovery was highlighted by the New York Post on September 19, 2025.

Accidental Find: A Pot Filled With Centuries-Old Coins

The hobbyist detecting team Denar Kalisz initially aimed to locate remnants of German V-2 rockets near their hometown. However, their search unexpectedly unveiled ancient relics that date back over a millennium.

On June 7, team member Hubert Piasecki discovered a clay jar densely packed with a total of 631 items. The assortment included cross denarii, decorative pieces, silver bullion, and coins originating from various medieval European regions such as England, Hungary, Germany, and Czechia, with one coin linked to King Harold I of England.

Having been dedicated to metal detecting for over two decades, the group was unprepared for such an extraordinary find. “We pursue this as a passion,” explained the president of the group, Przemysław Kurowiak. Presently, they are collaborating closely with professional archaeologists and have entrusted the artifacts to Poland’s Conservator of Monuments to ensure their careful preservation.

Second Sealed Clay Vessel Reveals Silver Treasure Through CT Imaging

A few weeks following the initial discovery, member Michał Makuch located another sealed clay pot buried nearby. Although this pot remains unopened, advanced CT scans have revealed it contains a treasure trove of silver coins, probably dating to the same early medieval era as the first collection.

Since then, the group’s recognition has soared, drawing attention not only within Poland but also internationally, including enthusiasts in the United States. What began as a quest for WWII memorabilia has unexpectedly transformed them into stewards of ancient heritage.

“We’re truly proud of this,” Kurowiak shared with Fox News. “It reinforces our belief in the importance and value of what we do.”

Rare Roman-Era Gold Necklace Amazes Experts

The most notable and breathtaking find emerged shortly thereafter when member Mateusz Lachowicz unearthed a gold necklace weighing 222 grams, estimated to be nearly 1,800 years old. This stunning piece is believed to originate from the Roman era, representing one of the most significant historical finds by non-professional detectorists in recent years.

Images published by Denar Kalisz on their Facebook page display the necklace still embedded in earth, preserving its elegant form and radiant gold despite centuries underground. Kurowiak described the find as “an archaeological sensation in Poland,” a sentiment clearly justified by the discovery's magnitude.

While the gold necklace captures much of the spotlight, every artifact the group excavates contributes to reconstructing lost chapters of the local past. What started as a search for faded wartime items has become a fascinating exploration of centuries-old history buried beneath their feet.
