Gov. Hochul Alerts New Yorkers to Rain, Snow, and Flooding Risks as 2025 Approaches

New York is bracing for adverse weather that could disrupt New Year's Eve plans and bring hazardous winter conditions to upstate areas. Governor Kathy Hochul has issued alerts and instructed state agencies to stay vigilant as severe weather systems move in.

Rainfall Hits NYC, Snow Expected in Upstate Areas

Attendees of New Year’s Eve events in Times Square should be prepared for heavy rain that might affect celebrations when the ball drops. Meanwhile, much of upstate New York is likely to see significant snowfall paired with strong winds, creating dangerous travel scenarios.

“Rain is anticipated for those celebrating in Times Square, while upstate residents could encounter considerable snow and gusty winds,” Hochul stated, encouraging everyone to keep an eye on weather updates and exercise caution. “We advise New Yorkers to stay alert to weather changes and avoid traveling unless necessary this weekend.”

Lake-Effect Snow to Impact Northern Counties

The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts heavy snowfall east and southeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario starting Wednesday night, continuing through the weekend. Areas including Western New York, the Finger Lakes, Central New York, the Mohawk Valley, and North Country should prepare for substantial accumulation and whiteout conditions due to strong winds.

Safety Measures Recommended

Officials are coordinating efforts to respond swiftly to any emergencies, urging residents to take necessary steps:

  • Keep informed with real-time updates by visiting the NWS website or signing up for NY Alert to receive notifications on mobile devices or computers.
  • Limit travel, especially in zones expecting heavy snow and low visibility.
  • Times Square visitors are advised to wear waterproof gear and prepare for wet weather conditions.

Continuous monitoring of the weather situation is underway to manage any disruptions efficiently.

Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for NYC and Long Island

The National Weather Service (NWS) also released a coastal flood advisory valid Wednesday morning for Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and Nassau County. Issued early Tuesday at 4:33 a.m., it remains effective from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Flood-prone waterfront and shoreline locations might see as much as six inches of flooding above ground level, posing hazards to residents and motorists. The NWS strongly discourages driving through flooded streets.
