Uncovering a 190-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Fossil on Portugal’s Coastline

Scientists have unveiled an extraordinary dinosaur fossil dating back more than 190 million years, discovered along the shores of Portugal. This specimen, retrieved from the Lower Jurassic limestone at Água de Madeiros beach, ranks among the oldest fossils ever uncovered in the country. Overcoming Difficulties in Excavation

The Portugal News reports that the excavation posed significant challenges. The fossilized remains, tipping the scales at roughly 1,200 kg, were embedded in a beach area frequently battered by heavy waves and harsh winter weather. Due to the relentless tides and sea conditions, the excavation demanded meticulous planning. Lacking access to heavy transport equipment, the research team devised a strategic approach to safeguard the fossil's integrity during removal.

The extraction, which occurred in early February 2025, was led by paleontologists from the Lourinhã Museum collaborating closely with authorities from the Marinha Grande municipality. The project was conducted under the careful supervision of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) to guarantee the fossil's preservation remained the foremost concern.

Fossil Transport and Preservation

Following removal, the fossil was carefully transported to the Lourinhã Museum’s specialized lab, where it is undergoing an extensive process of cleaning and stabilization. Known for its expertise on fossils from the Lower Jurassic epoch, the museum is dedicated to preserving this significant discovery.

The local government of Marinha Grande played an essential role in assisting with the transport logistics, coordinating efforts with the museum to ensure smooth handling. Officials confirmed in a statement that an international research team led by the Lourinhã Museum will examine the fossil in depth, with findings expected to be released in Marinha Grande.

This fossil represents the culmination of years of targeted paleontological surveys made possible through the collaboration between Lourinhã Museum and Marinha Grande municipality, which began in 2021. The project strives to protect the area’s fossil heritage and reveal the ancient mysteries buried beneath its landscape.

First spotted in 2024, these fossilized remains were discovered in a coastal zone exposed to persistent erosion by waves and storms. The vulnerability of their location necessitated an urgent excavation to save the specimen. Now entrusted to experts, this ancient treasure promises to illuminate the diverse fauna that roamed Earth millions of years ago.
