U.S. Space Force Unveils First Orbit Photo of Classified X-37B Spacecraft

The U.S. Space Force has, for the first time, shared an image of its enigmatic X-37B spaceplane while in orbit, granting the public an unprecedented glimpse of one of the most covert spacecraft currently in operation. Captured by an onboard camera, the photo features Earth as the backdrop alongside visible portions of the X-37B’s solar array and its open payload compartment.

Manufactured by Boeing, the X-37B spaceplane has remained in Earth’s orbit for more than a year since launching on its seventh mission aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket on December 28, 2023. Previously, the only visual data available to the public was a brief clip displaying the X-37B detaching from the Falcon Heavy’s upper stage during launch. This recent photo is the first clear depiction of the spacecraft actively operating in orbit.

Although the image doesn’t disclose sensitive mission details, it does verify that the X-37B is functioning at altitudes higher than in earlier missions, prompting curiosity about the new experiments and capabilities being tested.

Understanding the X-37B’s Objectives

Despite its growing number of flights, the X-37B’s exact role continues to be largely undisclosed. Official statements from the Space Force indicate that the vehicle serves primarily as a testbed for emerging space technologies. Experiments focus on factors such as radiation effects, advancements in reusable spacecraft, and techniques for maneuvering in orbit.

“During preparations for its current mission, the U.S. Space Force announced that the flight would ‘include operating the reusable spaceplane in new orbital regimes, experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies, and investigating the radiation effects on materials provided by NASA,’” the Space Force explained.

A defining feature of this mission is its unusual orbital path. While earlier X-37B missions have mostly concentrated on low Earth orbit operations, this mission has the spaceplane traveling in a highly elliptical orbit, reaching much greater distances from Earth. This change suggests the spacecraft is exploring more sophisticated navigation methods, potentially preparing for missions further into deep space or surveillance at elevated orbits.

Innovative Orbit Adjustment Techniques

An important experiment on this mission is the use of a pioneering aerobraking technique, which employs atmospheric drag to modify the spacecraft’s orbit more efficiently with reduced fuel use.

“An onboard camera on the X-37B, tasked with monitoring vehicle condition, captured the image of Earth during its experiments in a highly elliptical orbit in 2024,” the Space Force reported. “As part of the seventh mission, the vehicle performed groundbreaking aerobraking maneuvers to safely adjust its orbit while conserving fuel.”

If effective, this method could transform how future spacecraft change trajectories. Instead of relying heavily on fuel for orbital shifts, aerobraking allows vehicles to enter the fringes of the atmosphere, leveraging natural air resistance to slow down and alter orbit. This technique has seen use in interplanetary missions like NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, but applying it to a reusable vehicle such as the X-37B presents new challenges.

The Emerging Strategic Space Contest

The secretive nature of the X-37B missions has sparked speculation about its intended applications, with some experts considering it a prototype for advanced military space operations. The intensifying technological space race between the U.S. and China adds complexity, especially given China’s own reusable spaceplane developments.

China’s spacecraft took off for its third mission just weeks before the latest X-37B flight, and while details are scarce, analysts believe both countries are advancing reusable spacecraft technology, autonomous long-term missions, and potential orbital defense systems.

With two clandestine spaceplanes undergoing separate, secretive trials, it’s evident that space is securing its position as a critical and competitive arena. This newly unveiled X-37B image symbolizes not just a spacecraft but also the intensifying global pursuit to lead in space technology.
