How Left-Side Resting Could Boost Survival

Cats are particularly exposed during their sleep periods, which can last between 12 to 16 hours daily. Because they often rest in elevated locations, they must remain alert to potential dangers. This study explores whether the side cats choose to lie on affects their ability to react swiftly when threatened.

Choosing the left side appears to offer a specific benefit: when a cat sleeps on this side, visual information from its left visual field is sent to and processed by the right hemisphere of its brain. The team meticulously reviewed 408 original YouTube videos featuring cats sleeping openly in view. To preserve data quality, they excluded any manipulated clips such as mirrored videos.
