On March 17, 2025, Taara officially parted ways with its former parent company, Alphabet, the corporate umbrella behind Google, emerging as an independent firm. Famed for its cutting-edge use of laser technology, Taara is aiming to rival Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet provider, by revolutionizing high-speed connectivity in remote regions worldwide.
Innovative Laser Communication Technology
Taara has developed a pioneering system that uses laser beams to transmit data at remarkable speeds up to 20 gigabits per second over distances as far as 20 kilometers. Their solution relies on Lightbridges, compact devices about the size of a traffic signal, which are installed on poles to facilitate this point-to-point connectivity.
This technology is notable for its swift deployment and cost efficiency compared to conventional fiber optic infrastructure, making it ideal for extending internet access to isolated or difficult-to-reach areas such as islands and valleys, according to Engadget.
By bypassing the need for extensive trench digging or cable laying, Taara’s laser-based network offers reliable, high-speed internet where traditional networks are either impractical or extremely costly to implement.
Rapid Global Expansion and Market Presence
Since launching, Taara has grown quickly, now operating in 12 countries. Its technology powerfully supports projects in locations like Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and high-profile events such as California’s Coachella festival. These deployments showcase Taara’s capability to deliver resilient and swift internet amidst dynamic environments.
With a dedicated team of roughly 20 employees, the company is focused on expanding its footprint even further. Independence from Alphabet enables Taara to secure fresh investments and forge strategic alliances, which are expected to accelerate its development and global scaling.
Eric “Astro” Teller, X’s Captain of Moonshots, remarked on the spin-off, noting, “They’re going to be able to get connected quickly to market capital, bring in strategic investors and generally be able to scale faster this way.”
Next-Gen Miniaturized Chip to Simplify Installation
Looking ahead, Taara plans to introduce a miniaturized chip in 2026 that will replace the bulkier Lightbridges. This advancement promises to streamline setup processes further, reducing the physical and logistical footprint while preserving the exceptional performance of Taara’s laser communication systems.
Founder Mahesh Krishnaswamy emphasized the breakthrough, stating, “We can offer a connection 10 to 100 times faster than a typical Starlink antenna, and at a much lower cost.” This could dramatically lower obstacles for delivering high-speed internet to underserved communities where traditional infrastructure has fallen short.
A Viable Complement and Rival to Starlink
While Starlink continues to expand its satellite-based global network, Taara aims to deliver a more affordable and focused solution. Starlink shines in covering large, often sparsely populated regions, whereas Taara targets localized, high-speed connectivity in specific places like villages, islands, and large-scale events, where its laser technology can be deployed swiftly and economically.
The two technologies could actually work together, with Starlink providing wide-area coverage from space and Taara offering high-throughput connections in demand-heavy pockets, improving overall internet infrastructure comprehensiveness.
