In Romania, a woman unknowingly used one of the world’s largest intact amber stones as a doorstop for years. This remarkable 3.5-kilogram piece, later identified as the rare rumanite variety of amber, is currently valued at nearly 1 million euros and has been declared a cultural treasure.
The incredible find originated in Colți village, Buzău County, where the woman came across the stone near a stream and brought it inside, unaware of its ancient origins. The stone’s deep reddish-black coloration was eye-catching, though there was no hint it was fossilized resin dating back tens of millions of years.
It was only after the woman passed away in 1991 that a family member began to suspect the stone's true worth. This led to an expert appraisal and a stunning recognition that the object was far more valuable than an ordinary doorstop.
An Unexpected Riverbank Treasure
The amber piece was originally found close to a stream bed near the Buzău River, a region known for amber deposits. Its weight of about 3.5 kilograms and striking dark hues made it stand out. Over the years, the woman simply used it as a practical doorstop at home.
Amber mining has been ongoing in the sandstone formations along the Buzău River since the 1920s, which makes the presence of fossilized resin here well established. Yet, a find of this exceptional size and clarity remains extremely rare.

As reported by El País, the property was once targeted by thieves seeking jewelry. Mistaken for a simple rock, however, the amber was overlooked and remained unharmed.
A Boundless Gem Revealed
Following the woman’s death, the house and the stone inside received new attention. The artifact was sold to the Romanian government, which tasked experts at the Museum of History in Kraków with its analysis.
Scientists identified the gem as rumanite, a valuable amber variety known for its radiant red shades. As a fossilized tree resin, amber preserves ancient life and is often millions of years old. This specimen was dated to be between 38 and 70 million years old.
The experts confirmed that this stone is among the largest whole amber specimens ever documented worldwide.
From Common Object to Cultural Icon
The amber’s appraised worth approaches 1 million euros, reflecting both its impressive scale and uncommon rarity. Recognized as one of the largest intact rumanite specimens discovered, its scientific and financial value skyrocketed.
After official verification by Romanian authorities, the stone was designated a national treasure. Since 2022, it has been exhibited at the Buzău Provincial Museum, where it is preserved as a vital piece of geological and cultural history.
“Its discovery represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level,” Daniel Costache, director of the Provincial Museum of Buzău, told El País.
