A fisherman from Russia has captured the attention of the online world by hauling in a deeply unsettling fish from the ocean’s depths. The strange creature’s eerie appearance has led many to liken it to something from a sci-fi thriller.

Roman Fedortsov, hailing from Murmansk, Russia, has made a name for himself by bringing to light some of the ocean’s most unusual and alien-looking marine animals. Earlier this February, Fedortsov posted photos revealing his newest find: Aptocyclus ventricosus, commonly known as the Pacific spiny lumpsucker or bloated snailfish. This unique fish belongs to the Cyclopteridae family and is native to the cold waters of the North Pacific, notably near Russia, Japan, and Alaska.
The Pacific spiny lumpsucker is distinguished by its rounded, swollen body covered in wart-like tubercles, which create a spike-studded texture. It uses a specialized suction disc beneath its belly to attach firmly to rocks and seabeds.
Yet the specimen in Fedortsov's photographs looked unusually distorted—its body appeared grotesquely enlarged, accompanied by a slack, almost haunting facial expression that reminded viewers of extraterrestrial creatures from films like Alien or Mars Attacks.
Fedortsov explained that the fish’s swollen form resulted from the rapid pressure change encountered when it was pulled to the surface. Many deep-dwelling animals experience drastic physical changes when exposed to the lower pressure environment above.
